Prospective students apply
to National ABC in New York City,
www.abetterchance.org.
Applications and information are available online.
National ABC then refers
appropriate applications to
the various ABC programs
around the country, including Simsbury. We then review the applications and select those applicants whom we wish to interview. Selected applicants and their parents visit the ABC house and tour the town. During the
visit we interview both the
prospective student and
their parents, give them a
tour of the town and high
school, and have the student
stay overnight at the house
to get to know the other
students. If possible, we
arrange some academic
testing at our high school
for placement purposes.
After the interview, the
student selection committee
determines whether to offer
to the student an
opportunity to join the
program.
Simsbury
ABC charges a nominal
tuition fee of $300 per
year, plus a $100 damage
deposit, refundable after
graduation.
Our high
school offers an extensive
array of courses and
after-school sports, clubs,
and activities. For more
information, go to the
Simsbury High School Web
site.
New
students share a room with
one other student, and some
upper classmen can “earn” a
single room, with good
grades.
Each
student has an “academic
advisor”, in addition to the
services of the resident
tutors, to help him achieve
his full academic potential.
Each student also has a
host
family, which has a son
the same age. Our cook
prepares dinners five nights
a week, and on week-ends the
scholars usually work with
the RDs to arrange or cook
dinner. Lunches are
available at no charge to
ABC students at our high
school.
